tiger blip

was quite taken today by some rather lovely pieces of tigers eye and thought i'd make them my blip of the day.

this picture shows a selection of golden yellow tigers eye and red tigers eye.

Golden Tigers Eye is formed from limonite fibres embedded in quartz. Red Tigers Eye gets its colour from added Iron Oxide. The striated fibres give tigers eye the curious shimmer effect when light hits the stone - giving it its association with the eye of a tiger!

In Middle Ages tigers eye was used to make amulets that were believed to protect the wearer against spells, demons and the evil eye!

It is also a very beautiful stone to look at and many favour tigers eye for jewellery, with its shimmering chatoyancy it can look spectacular as cabachons in rings, pendants and the like.
