Lunch

Today I went into Edinburgh to see Mum, failed to see my PhD student J, and then met up for lunch with И, another PhD student K, and my friend M. I then went with И to a café, where we failed to find the bug that was troubling me yesterday. 

All this came after a meeting with a PhD student in China who wants to visit me for a year from next September. After listening to her talk about her work, I agreed to support her application, and it was touching to see how pleased and excited she was. It feels good to give smart young people the opportunities that they seek and merit, as I know from my students and children that life is harder for their generation than mine.
