The Historical Society

I just love this mural (painted by the kids) on the wall of the old Cross Primary School. The building is on the main road, just down the hill from Cross Post Office and also from the Cross Stores, both of which I have blipped earlier. The building is now used by Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (the Ness (local) history Society) a voluntary group that has done some amazing pioneer work collecting oral history, local photographs, family histories etc of this area. The group was started about 1977 through an innovative Job Creation Scheme (and was initially managed by my wife, straight from university). I believe it was the first of its kind in the country, though lots of other historical societies have since sprung up. The building is open for visitors.
