Cry Me A River

We carry our sadnesses
around with us
of course we do

And sometimes
they surface
and emerge

through our eyes
and via the tremors
in our bodies

‘Cry me a river’ sang
Julie London who,
the day after

she turned 70,
lost a daughter
in a road accident.

My god
the thought of losing
a daughter

after
any birthday
at any time!

I’d weep
an ocean
become a lost soul.

I'd be
an empty shell
on the bereft

seashore.
