There and back again

An Ancient Landscape

Our wondering today took us up on the northern flanks of Cox Tor where to the west Dartmoor drops away towards Tavistock and Bodmin Moor beyond. If you look north you see this little spit of enclosed land that leads up to White Tor and the military firing ranges.

Within its boundaries which date back to the Bronze age you will see Wedlake Farm and also the remains of old tin workings and blowing houses and the remains of Settlements.

There are also several examples of boundary works which were part of a Bronze Age field system which, according to Andrew Fleming in his book "Dartmoor Reaves" radiated out over the marginal lands of, and enclosed, most of the moor

It is certainly an area worth exploring for any Dartmoor enthusiast but today it was bitter and we were glad to do our walk and escape back to the car.
