Advent Day 21 - Dark Days and Dryads

Just as the days become as short as it is possible to bear, the Old Ones emerge and perform the rites and dances which cause the days to begin to grow longer again. For this they are paid in meat and wine. We are modern, educated people and we know that the days will lengthen again whether or not the dances happen. So there is no real reason for our annual ritual of leaving parcels of food and drink around the edges of their glade. The offerings are almost certainly consumed by teenagers or travellers and the noises of music and revels must have a quotidian source.

But why take the chance?
