The Lozarithm Lens

Doodle #5

It may look as if my eighteen-year old self was making some obscure, slightly surreal comment on Christmas, but I think actually I was testing whether I could trace a book illustration through sketchbook paper and just used the first one that came to hand, and there was a blank space about the right size on this page. I didn't sign it, possibly because the traced illustration wasn't mine, or because I decided I'd spoiled a perfectly acceptable asymmetrical diptych.

I chose this doodle because today is the day of the closest Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in several hundred years, which coming as it has between the winter solstice and Christmas Day has reminded us all that the bright star that appeared in the sky at the time of Christ's birth is generally thought to be that same conjunction.

I am convinced that this is so, in which case astronomers agree it happened on 15 September 7 BC (Old Style)(Julian Calendar) in the early morning, and not  in December.
