Chicken run

Did an 18 mile run this morning. Don't ask me how as I can't tell you. Mind over matter (or legs) mostly.

Went to Waitrose to buy some food for dinner afterwards and had such a stereotypically Waitrose experience it was comical. The bottom shelf of the chicken fridge looked like a pack of foxes had set upon it. No free range chickens. Myself and a couple of other people were peering into the space in mystified fashion, as though we couldn't believe this could possibly happen in Waitrose.

All the staff on the shop floor on a Sunday are students who only eat chicken when they go to Nando's. When I explained what we were after one lad just pointed at the other shelves full of the Essential birds and said 'they're chickens aren't they?' . The Free Range Brigade all looked at him as though he had suggested we eat horse instead.

So off he went to find some other chickens and we all stood around chatting. 'It's getting worse in here' said one woman. 'The other day I came in and they were completely out of fresh oregano!'. Other shoppers passed by watching us hanging around and were clearly wondering if we were the chosen few eligible for the latest gold plated Heston Blumenthal product to be launched.

Eventually the free range chickens arrived and were handed over with great ceremony. Order was restored and we all wandered off amicably saying things like 'well they do taste so much better don't they?' as we said our goodbyes. Hilarious...
