On the Penguin Trail

I spent a wonderful day with Blipper, 'Flying'. We hunted down a few more Penguins. The day started off cloudy but it soon cleared to blue skys and around 25c. Christchurch was under cloud until later in the day.. John said.

Birds of a Feather

Design Inspiration
The inspiration for ‘Birds of a Feather’ comes from the values within NEST Arts Collective’s mission statement and the visual metaphors they use to describe those values. NEST Arts Collective is all about unique individuals coming together to share, inspire and support each other’s creative art practice. This design, ‘Birds of a Feather’, brings together a collection of unique native birds, which have been painted across the surface of the penguin – NEST Arts Collective thinks this concept links well to Pop Up Penguins and Christchurch as an example of community spirit and creative collaboration.

Top Right: Kia Manawaroa
Created by: Morgan Mathews-Hale (Kaitiaki Studios)
Design Inspiration
‘Kia Manawaroa’ is a reference to one of the artist’s whānau’s favourite animated penguins, Tank Evans. For Pop Up Penguins, Morgan has created this in a contemporary Te Waipounamu Māori style. This artwork relates to our urban resilience in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. A city positively adapting and transforming amongst a series of trying times, as we continue to navigate our collective wellbeing and inclusive growth.

Design Inspiration
With the disruptions and uncertainties we have all faced with Covid 19 this year, this penguin represents the hero that the world never imagined it would need. Armed/Flippered with sanitiser, a mask and a QR scanner, Gary Te Tuahangata will be a mighty force of defence for Aotearoa.
