The Democracy Cairn - Calton Hill

Today’s early morning Covid Exercise Walk took me along Princes Street where I observed countless buses and trams with only one or two passengers and then up Calton Hill where I came across the Democracy Cairn - a monument to the 'Vigil for a Scottish Parliament' that lasted 1980 days by the Royal High School (at the foot of the hill) from 1992-97 until the cause was won.

A quotation from Hugh MacDiarmid appears at the base of the monument:

“For we ha'e faith
in Scotland's hidden poo'ers
The present's theirs
but a' the past and future's oors”

The cairn includes a number of stones brought from far afield - from Robert Burns' cottage at Mauchline, from Robert the Bruce's castle at Lochmaben, from Ben Nevis, from Paris and from Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland.
The Extra Photo is a shot of the Plaque on the Cairn.
