Home Made Fog

When I wor a lad we made all our own fog. Everything used to go on the one open fire in the house (in the living room); Lignite, Nutty Slack, Coke, bits of wood we'd gleaned, the next-door neighbours fence etc.

I remember one foggy evening riding home the 3 miles from school on the corporation 'bus. We thought we might have to walk as the fog was so bad but hats off to the conductor - he walked the whole route (and more after we disembarked) about two yards in front of the 'bus so the driver could see and follow him.

And it's certainly a long time since a saw one of these - a chimney on fire - as this one was. The smoke billowing out was blown away but the atmospherics kept it low. It was puthering all around the town half a mile away. Ah, memories!
