Greylag

Today's the day …………………….. to eat out

Our house is underneath the flightpath of geese and swans as they fly to and from their roosting spots on the Solway coast.

We think that perhaps they are following the course of the River Dee to find the rich grassland where they feed during the day.  They certainly seem to make a right turn, just as the river does, on their way inland in the morning (see extra) and the opposite at the end of the day.  It's almost as if they're following the goose equivalent of a sat. nav.

I think these are greylag geese that were on a field near us.  The farmer has spent lots of time putting in drainage ditches and endlessly fertilising this field last year.  The grass is very lush and a bright green colour even in the middle of winter.  I'm sure the geese are really enjoying the vegetarian cuisine on offer.

Let's hope the farmer is just as pleased that he's sharing it with them...………….
