Spirit of the Sea

‘Traditionally hemispherical in form and made of willow, most of these traps are now cylindrical in shape and made of metal, of chestnut laths bound together with nets dipped in pitch, or of synthetic materials. The entrance to the pot, positioned at the end of the cylinder or along the side is funnel shaped, so that the crustaceans, attracted by the bait, can creep inside but cannot get out again. These utterly functional objects also provide a decorative leitmotif in the landscape of the fishing port.’
