Postbuses

Just finished a 1994 book about the postbuses of Scotland. The photo is of the Royal Mail's popular Sherpa mini bus on the first route in Scotland Dunbar to Innerwick started June 1968. These were established in that year by Tony Benn Postmaster General across the UK as a response to rural rail closures. They carried mail but also some passengers many of whom would be older people without cars and living in remote rural places using them to visit shops doctors etc. They picked up mail from people too when they put a flag out. The drivers would know their passengers except the increasing number of tourists in recent years. There were 200 routes in Scotland until 2017 when Royal Mail started carrying mail only in larger vans
