The Abbey of Deer

Another beautiful frosty morning today. And I knew exactly what I wanted to capture as I scraped the car. We live a few miles away from the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Deer, started in 1219 by William Comyn, Earl of Buchan, and once home to that famous little book, the Book of Deir. I pass the stone portico that guards the entrance to the abbey regularly, but don't have time to stop as often as I would like. It's a magical spot, very peaceful yet intensely atmospheric. I can almost see the monks moving around the ruins. The ruins belong to the RC Diocese of Aberdeen but are maintained by Historic Scotland on behalf of us all. Visit if you can.
