A Slice of Reality

Another derelict ship for this week's Derelict Sunday, this time a work of art by one of Britain’s most renowned sculptors, Richard Wilson RA, commissioned in 2000 by the Millennium Dome, now the O2, on the north-western bank of the Greenwich Peninsula.

'A Slice of Reality' consists of a 9-metre (30 ft) vertical section through the former 800-ton sand dredger Arco Trent and exposes portions of the former living quarters of the vessel to the elements - on one of the lower decks a pool table is even visible behind perspex!

Wilson describes the work as a ‘sound bite’, communicating Greenwich’s rich maritime history, whilst referencing the manner in which the line of the Meridian slices through the Greenwich Peninsula.

'A Slice of Reality' is part of The Line, London’s first dedicated public art walk. Its outdoor exhibition programme illuminates an inspiring landscape where everyone can explore art, nature and heritage for free.
The route runs between Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The O2, following the waterways and the line of the Greenwich Meridian.
