Cambridge Dave's 2021

Remembering VR

I came across a story the other day that an old Royal Mail post box had been stolen in Sussex, UK. 'Is nothing sacred?', I thought. Our street in Cambridge was developed primarily between 1870 and 1914. To my shame, I had never looked properly at our nearest post-box before this morning only to discover that it has this wonderful 'VR' crest which is not surprising I guess as Queen Victoria was on the throne when the older part of our street was developed. A quick search on the internet provides a wealth of information about them world-wide. But here's a thought: with the advent of electronic mail, online banking, online documentation and so on, how long before they are all removed with the best examples kept for museum exhibition? Twenty years perhaps? Photograph one while you can!
