Encyclia vitellina

Success! This little flower is the result of several years of careful nurture by Rob. The parent plant has been living with us for nearly 30 years, and this year has two fine flower stems each with a dozen or more flowers. As it grows, new bulbs grow on one side of the plant, whilst the old ones remain as supports and food stores, but do not flower again.
These old bulbs can be detached at repotting time, and so we planted a couple and waited to see if anything would happen. After a long few months new growth was noticed and tiny new bulbs appeared. The next year, again new bulbs appeared in front of those, and this year it seems that one is large enough to flower! Bit of a long wait but delightful now we have got there!
And in extra, another quilt square complete and I am happier with my colour choices as the central star stands out from the surround.
