The past is a foreign country

I am in the process of digitising all my photos and I came across this taken in Guilin during our tour of China some thirty years ago.

The fisherman still practises the 1,000-year-old traditional art of cormorant fishing on the river Li. The birds have their necks tied so they can't swallow the fish so  they are forced regurgitate them.

Although this may seem like a cruel practice, in one way these cormorants do well out of it: The lifespan of a wild cormorant is about 4 to 5 years, but these birds, well fed and cared for by the fishermen, can expect to live 15 to 20 years.

Go to extra for some light relief.
