A weed is a plant in the wrong place

In this case  in the wrong country.

Walking around the local streets it struck me that almost everything growing along the roadsides is introduced – a weed, not a native. Not surprising, since they are escapees from the gardens that border the roads, and those too generally contain more non natives than natives.

Does it matter? Yes, in that the introduced species that escape into the bush or into pasture land tend to overwhelm the less aggressive native species.

I don’t know what the orange flowers are. When I was a child we called them ‘flame flowers’ but they don’t look anything like what Dr Google tells me is a flame flower. The blackberries are a noxious weed in NSW and have also been declared a ‘weed of national significance’. A far cry from those happy childhood memories of blackberrying.
