Dog's Paddle

I don't have a dog so I don't know what the attitude in general of dogs is to swimming. Some of the dogs run into the water after various things that are thrown in to encourage them. I do not know if they would have gone in themselves. Other dogs do not need any pronting to swim and go in themselves. Is it a certain breed that likes to take to the water or is it just up the individual dog?
