My Life in Pictures

A Trip to the Gaumont, Aberdeen

Today, I took a trip from Huntly to Aberdeen to see "MacKenna's Gold at the Gaumont Cinema in Aberdeen. The film, a western directed by J.Lee Thompson had a great cast - Gregory Peck, Telly Savalas and Omar Sharif - and the plot centred on how the lure of gold corrupts people. The fact that the film needed a narrator to explain bits of the plot however said it all. The film was not critically acclaimed. However I loved the musical score so much, by Quincy Jones and particularly the Opening Song  "Old Turkey Buzzard" sung by Jose Feliciano that I went on to buy the soundtrack LP.
Watching the Opening Titles still puts a shiver of excitement down my spine.
The Gaumont in 1969 was a Rank Organisation Cinema and along with the Odeon in Justice Mill Lane was a 'first run' cinema. Sadly it closed four years later and the building was demolished and replaced by shops/office block.
The cinema opened originally in 1914 called 'The Picture House' then taken over by Gaumont British Theatres(GB) in 1929 and re-named The Gaumont in 1950.
