And Off They Go

Sandhill Cranes leaving their Winter home for their nesting grounds in the Great Lakes region. I'm always a bit sad to watch as they 'kettle', using thermals to gain altitude, all the while calling to other members of their flock to hurry up and join them. When everyone is accounted for, off they fly in their characteristic 'V' formation.

The following always comes to my mind when I see them depart:

'May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.'
