Two-Step with Snow Shovel

The Polar Vortex has hit the Pacific Northwest. Today we received about 6 inches of snow (15+ cm). Strong winds blew more snow in some spots around the house. Our house is surrounded by decking on three sides and Jeff was concerned about the weight of snow, so he went out and shovel twice today.

While he was busy with the snow, I baked an enriched version of Bernard Clayton's War Bread. Clayton wrote that when white flour was scarce, often during times of war, rolled oats, cornmeal, and whole wheat flour was added to stretch the white flour. I also add currants, walnuts, or sliced almonds as well as a couple of additional tablespoons of oil.

While the bread was rising, I made clam chowder--a wonderful way to stay warm on this bitter and windy night!

Thank you for your comments, hearts, and stars for Dreamland, I appreciate it.
