Return to the North

Kayak capital of New Zealand

Murchison is in the throws of the Bullerfest this weekend. Kayakers from all over NZ and the world as a whole turn up for a weekend of kayak frolicking on the Buller and Matakitaki rivers.
Today it was the turn of the Matakitaki to host some of the races. Twitcherjay ha taken a group of year 10 lads up to watch some of the racing. (They having taken up kayaking with our tech/outdoor ed teacher) Sadly I don't think they saw much actual racing so she headed back to town with them and they grovelled and begged me to take them in my non contact period. SO kind, caring teacher that I am (or mug, whichever you prefer) took them up for another hour.
It was blazing hot by this time which really wasn't fun!

We saw numerous women's races including one where a kayaker parted company with her boat! Just as we were about to leave they announced the running of the under 17 race. Two of our year 11 students were entered so of course we had to stop and watch and cheer.

So this is A and K racing for their lives. Neither parted company with their boats :-)
