Manchester's finest?

Who is, or was, Manchester's greatest?

Serious-minded people, years ago, used to idolise C.P. Scott who was editor of the (then) Manchester Guardian. Being serious myself, I would have gone for John Dalton who, basically and all on his own, just invented the science of chemistry as we know it today.

Then there's a whole bunch of musicians and footballers, of whom some must have been actually born in Manchester, which John Dalton wasn't, to be honest.

But my nominee is Joseph Holt, brewer, whose amber nectar brought happiness to millions. (I've never actually been in the Red Lion, but it's next to Aldi, where I did my shopping today, and it's an attractive building to photograph.)
