Crazy About Birds

By Kimb

Brief Visit

I've had very few starlings at our feeders so far this winter. This trio put in a flying (see what I did there?) appearance this morning and then disappeared as quickly as they came. They managed to snag a few peanuts while they were here.

The extra is the male red-bellied woodpecker. He's here to demonstrate that his head is red from his bill all the way back down his neck, unlike his mate's (see yesterday). Also you can somewhat see the eponymous red belly. Why are they not called "red-headed" you ask? Well, we have a red-headed woodpecker too - and it has a totally red head, so it gets to legitimately have the name.
