Butcher Bird's Larder

At first sight the bark peeling from this birch tree looked uncannily like a small mammal impaled on a twig as if part of a Butcher Bird's Larder. The red backed shrike is known as the Butcher Bird on account of its grisly habit of impaling the small mammals, on which it preys, on thorns and sharp twigs.
