A trip to the Murray Mouth

Hindmarsh Island is accessible by a road bridge. It’s located within the Coorong National Park and oversees the confluence of the Murray River and the Southern Ocean, the “Murray Mouth’.

The Murray River is Australia’s longest, flowing down from the Australian Alps through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

Sand pumping plays an essential role in keeping the Murray Mouth open and allowing water to flow into the sea. Dredging has been in operation since 2002, at an annual cost of $6 million. It is essential to keep the water flowing, as the ecological consequences for the Coorong environment would otherwise be devastating.

A lovely relaxing day exploring southern regions of our state. A pub lunch in Normanville, and after returning home a late pizza from La Trat.
