Electricity substation No 227

Between 1904 and 1936 more than 360 electricity substations were built by the Municipal Council of Sydney. Their purpose was to produce and distribute electricity in response to a growing industrial and domestic demand and many continue today with this function.

Over the years there were several standard designs for the substations with minor local variations. Many of the earlier ones were built in the art nouveau, art deco and Spanish mission styles, but by the 1930s these gave way to simpler, smaller, more austere constructions. All styles are represented among the significant number of heritage listed electricity substations around Sydney.

No. 227 is a later model and is not heritage listed. It is however derelict. See extra for the most ornate bit of detail.

Thanks for hosting Marlieske. Stay well all.
