Wipers

Bronze statue of a soldier at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.

This sculpture was created by Charles Sergeant Jagger who fought at Gallipoli and the Western Front. Wipers illustrates a war-hardened infantry soldier, standing guard with standard issue .303 rifle, bayonet fixed. Many English speaking servicemen pronounced the Belgian town Ypres (location of many bloody battles) as 'Wipers'.
