Comely Bank Cemetery

Grey, chilly day today. Just the day to take my lunchtime walk in the nearby cemetery. Comely Bank Cemetery is a bit inconspicuous and rather scruffy and unkempt looking, yet it holds a certain charm and is, of course, very peaceful.
The section which contains the war graves plot is very well tended. Due to the proximity to the city’s hospitals it contains a disproportionately high number of WWI and WWII casualties who died of wounds or illnesses related to their wartime experiences. At least 50 of the servicemen buried here died of influenza (the so called “Spanish Flu”). Also buried here is Reginald Earnshaw, the UK’s youngest wartime service casualty of WWII who was only fourteen when he died under enemy fire on the SS North Devon off the coast of Norfolk in 1941.
An unusual feature of the war graves plot is that the granite headstones lie flat, a decision made by the architect, Sir Robert Lorimer.
