The Larches on a Windy Day

I love the really windy days we get here, when you can feel the house sway and the windows and doors rattle and buzz, the bell out front ringing like mad and the aspens and larches swishing back and forth all around the house. Of course today the wind was also bitter cold, which can be problematic. My wife heard reports about some power outages and called home to see if the answering machine would pick up. Sure enough, no power. She was able to get home in case things really started to freeze up and the fireplace needed to be called into action, but luckily the outage only lasted a couple of hours. Better luck than my coworker who had to rush home because a tree was down on her house.

I still love the wind around here.

The Sound of Trees by Robert Frost

I wonder about the trees.
Why do we wish to bear
Forever the noise of these
More than another noise
So close to our dwelling place?
We suffer them by the day
Till we lose all measure of pace,
And fixity in our joys,
And acquire a listening air.
They are that that talks of going
But never gets away;
And that talks no less for knowing,
As it grows wiser and older,
That now it means to stay.
My feet tug at the floor
And my head sways to my shoulder
Sometimes when I watch trees sway,
From the window or the door.
I shall set forth for somewhere,
I shall make the reckless choice
Some day when they are in voice
And tossing so as to scare
The white clouds over them on.
I shall have less to say,
But I shall be gone.
