A massive shallow 8.1 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands this morning threw New Zealand into a tsunami alert, which had many folk in the north of the North Island up onto higher ground until the emergency alert was over. There were surges of about 30cms, not a dangerous level, but justifying the alert - it was a great practice for the real thing.
