The 4th Commandment

The Decalogue are displayed behind the altar in St Peter's church. This is the oldest part of the church although its not known when the Commandment's were inscribed here - clearly it was when the readers were assumed to have man and maid servants. Why the Roman numeral IV is represented as IIII is a curiosity although often seen on clock faces. One explanation I've heard is that IV was avoided because it represented the Roman god Jupiter (IVPPITER).
