Wisteria - Kill or Cure

Wisteria - Kill or Cure
When we moved here to Haddenham in 2007 the garden had a Wisteria growing down the side passage to the back gate. We decided to move the branches so that it grew over the house above the kitchen window. It flowered for a few years. The flowers were very light in colour and not as rich as a lot we have seen.

A few years ago it seemed to stop flowering so much. Not being experts we wondered if we should prune it occasionally. We decided to do something about it this year.

To our surprise we discovered it should be prune it twice a year. In August or September, after it has flowered. Cutting the new whippy growth to  five or six leaves should encourage it to form flower buds. Then again on the same growths to two or three buds in February or March. Having found all this out on the RHS web site and numerous YouTube videos we decided to give it a hard prune. I have to admit reading the RHS web site I may not have been hard enough. Time will tell as the say.
