Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Signs of Spring

The white butterbur Petasites albus are erupting en masse from the ground. A good month earlier than last year!

The species is native to the mountains of Central Europe and the Caucasus. It was first imported into Britain in 1683 as a garden ornamental. The first record in the wild was at Storthes Hall in West Yorkshire, near to where I was born, but it is now most commonly found in the NE of Scotland.

Extra. The wild geese are on the move!
