Wooden Facades of Ortakoy

I did a lot of walking today. First to the nearest corner store, or bakal, which is about 15 minutes away to get some staples. Libby always accompanies me on this jaunt. It's a good distance and there is a safe place to tie her up outside. In the early afternoon, I took the bus to Ortakoy, partly because for the fun of strolling in a real neigbourhood, and partly to get chicken carcasses for Lib. This picture was taken up one of their side streets and depicts the sort of construction typical of the late Ottoman period. The overhanging second storey was built as window seats during the day and beds at night. The houses themselves face a central courtyard.
