A very splendid aviary

L3 Day 79 Cycled to Wimbledon Common and then walked in Cannizaro Park. The park is a remnant of the former country house, now a hotel (Hotel du Vin) at its centre. The house, built in the 18th century, was originally known as Warren House. Many wealthy people lived there and it was a social centre for royalty and politicians. In 1817 a Sicilian - Francis Platamone, Count St Antonio and his Scottish wife lived there. The Count left his wife and returned to Italy where he inherited the title Duke of Cannizaro. The house became known as Cannizaro House. In 1947 the house and gardens were sold to Wimbledon Borough Council and the house was used for a time as a nursing home. The London Borough of Merton sold the house in the 1980’s when it was converted to a hotel . The gardens remain in council ownership and are open to the public. There is a splendid aviary in the garden and an interesting Millenium Fountain( See extra)
