If you can't beat them...

Home building.

As I opened the blinds this morning this sight greeted me.  I am tempted to say it is a sign of spring but Wood-pigeons can breed at any time of the year if the weather is suitable.  I don't think this one had checked the weather forecast!    A day of high winds rain and at one point the path was white with hail.

Wood-pigeon nests are to me another of the wonders of nature.   Not because of their beauty but their construction.  A flimsy flat platform of twigs which is often so flimsy you can check how many eggs there are from below through the gaps.   Raising two growing squabs on such a platform would at first sight seem like an impossibility but somehow they manage.
