I doubt that many in the UK are unaware of events at Clapham Common last night.  Whatever you may think about the wisdom of large numbers of women coming together to hold a vigil, the way the police dealt with it was just appalling.  The comparison of the policing of, often pissed up, football fans celebrating matches, with the policing of a women's vigil for a murdered woman is so disturbing and upsetting (the football matches with their inevitable consequences are allowed, a vigil for a murdered woman is not).  The heavy handed treatment by police of women holding the vigil for the woman murdered ('allegedly') by one of their own, is extraordinarily ironic, insensitive and stupid.  Women are protesting about male violence against women and their actions show just how entrenched attitudes about how women can be treated still is.

And as for the BBC's reportage .... they caused a social media storm with their headline "Sarah Everard: Confrontation with police at 'unsafe' vigil" - they quickly replaced it but not before people had screen shot the original.  It is so depressing watching and listening to the not so gradual way the BBC is succumbing to the pressures from the Conservatives at Westminster.  Impartiality, my foot.  Where is the coverage of all the lies told by the Conservatives and their 'mismanagement' of billions during this pandemic?  There always seems to be a fortuitous  royal dead cat to throw on the table.  I used to rate quite a lot of the journalism at Radio Scotland but that has changed too - the difference in tone etc used when questioning politicians from the different parties is so telling.  I know there will be a lot of culling and bullying going on behind the scenes.  If you haven't watched the series 'Years and Years' by Russell T Davies, do - it is available on Iplayer.  It was made a few years ago and is so prophetic.
