Another Milwaukee Institution

And the chilly weather is back! That icy grey sky in the background means that snow is heading back in. As I sit looking out the window now, onto the dark street, there is an inch or more already settled on the ground.

Apparently the chance of snow remains until the middle of May.

The sign you see here is that of another institution in this city - Sendik's Foods. Now a local chain with quite a few locations, this one, on Downer Street in the Upper East Side/Murray Hill, is perhaps the oldest.

They focus on high quality foods and are incredibly serious about presentation. With a nostalgic 1950's exterior (like much of this part of Downer Street) the store inside is at once immaculate and cozy. The produce and meat departments are the best in the city. The prepared foods, featuring ingredients from both their own aisles and local bakeries, are perfect for any meal of the week.

It is our grocery store of choice, if I have not yet made that clear. And despite all the niceties, you will still pay the same or less here than at any major chain.
