Nelson Pillars - Meadows East

This is one of a pair of large pillars at the east end of the Meadows.  The lion rampant on top of the pillar is holding the city shield.  The pillar blocks are carved with the names of Edinburgh sandstone quarries.  The pillar on the opposite side of the road has a unicorn on top.  They were presented to the city in 1881 by the printing firm Thomas Nelson and Sons.  The two pillars at the west end of the Meadows were built in 1886 for the Edinburgh International Exhibition.
