1st Day of Spring?

Is the 21st March the first day of Spring or is it the 20th March. My mum insists it is the 21st as her grandads birthday was on the 21st and it was always said his birthday was the first day of Spring but when I googled it earlier it actually said the first day of Spring was yesterday. Who is right?
