Leith Fort

Today's Covid Exercise Walk took us down to Leith and the discovery the last remains of Leith Fort.
The Fort was designed by James Craig (who designed Edinburgh's New Town) and built in 1780 in response to a naval threat during the American War of Independence by John Paul Jones. Apparently the fort was in active use until 1955 when at that time it served as a training station for National Service.  Thereafter most of the barracks were demolished to build a Council housing scheme which itself was later demolished and the site re-developed for new housing But a pair of the old fort's gatehouses survive at the entrance to development as featured in this collage.
