Battle of the Bands Final

Long day today. I was on Campus for 10am and didn't get home until past midnight!

After classes I went to the University Emergency General Meeting called to discuss a motion to be tabled in Senate tomorrow regarding the Save The Arts campaign I blipped yesterday. We needed 300 students to turn up and pass the motion and we just scraped 400. Thankfully the meeting didnt drag too much, everything that needed to be said was said and we passed the motion by a Landslide. Now we will have to see whether the University will listen or take on the Students concerns...

After the meeting I walked to the other end of Campus to watch the Battle of the Bands final. Heats have been raging for 4 weeks and 5 of the best bands on campus took to the stage to battle it out for a chance to headline Campus Festival in a couple of weekends time. I had a shot at being in the final through Facebook 'Wildcard' Poll however I was beaten soundly by Ziggy and the Actors. I wasn't too fussed though, it was nice to just chill and watch rather than worrying about what I would play!

First up were Grandads Abyss who had suffered a last minute personel change meaning that they gave a rather lacklustre performance which was a shame for them as they were obviously talented, just unlucky to have band member problems which spoiled their chances

Next up were todays Blip: Yellow Bird. I've shard a few stages with the Yellow Bird lads and they do a line in folky indie singer songwritery tunes which are incredibly catchy. Great guys, great songs!

Following Yellow Bird were Sunset Boulevard, another Acoustic Duo who did a number of crowd pleasing covers but left me a little cold. They were evidently talented, I just wasn't overly impressed and their set wasn't as memorable as the previous act.

The penultimate act were Lake Komo, a new band formed by Jay Nudd, an acompished singer songwriter in his own right. The addition of Bass, Drums and Harmonica really worked and the band had the crowd in the palm of their hands by the end of their first song, a rousing cover of The King Of Spain. Adam, the Harmonica Player is incredibly talented and added a great dimension to Jay's usual singer songwriter fayre. The only downside of their set was the Skinny Love cover. It was a brilliant cover however Yellow Bird had already covered the same song and my personal bugbear is playing the same cover at a music night as someone else. It just smacks of oneupmanship and comes across as if you never bothered to listen to the other acts

Finally was the wildcard, Ziggy and the Actors who had the unenviable task of following Lake Komo. Musically they were good, with one of the Actors (the front man is caled Ziggy) having an incredible voice. But unfortunately they came across rather limp after Lake Komo.

In the end Lake Komo deservedly won the spot at Campus Fest with Yellow Bird a respectable second. Great night of music.
