A Grey Day

The sun has gone and the grey clouds blanket out the blue sky so I did not dawdle when it came to today's blip. While walking beside the river Cart I was taken by this view of two of the oldest buildings in Paisley.

On the right is Paisley Abbey which is celebrating its 800th anniversary this year. The Abbey began as a monastic institution but since the Reformation it has been a Church of Scotland building. The body of Marjorie Stewart, daughter of King Robert Bruce, lies in the eastern wing which was restored from being a ruin in the 1920s.

Across the road is the George A Clark Town Hall which opened in 1882 and was funded by a donation from the aforesaid George Clark. He was a rich cotton magnate and ancestor of Alan Clark, MP and diarist. It is being refurbished at the moment hence the scaffolded towers that look like ballistic missiles about to be launched into space.
