Crazy About Birds

By Kimb

Brown-headed Cowbird

I took ONE photo today. This is that photo.

This is a male. The female lays her eggs - all of them - in other birds' nests. Cowbirds are never raised by cowbirds. And yet, when they are adults they sing the cowbird song and mate with other cowbirds. Amazing.

Edit: Just for those of you who are following the "citizen science" thread - I swear I saw a junco this evening as I was washing the dishes and gazing out of the window that's over the kitchen sink. Maybe one that is coming from further south and just stopping briefly on its way north? Other than that I haven't seen once since about March 30.
