HMS Leander 1866

L3 Day 112. Chilly today so a short dog walk passing the big anchor outside Leander House. This large house with gardens down to the river was owned by Sir Donald Gosling, the man who started NCP( National Car Parks). After leaving the navy in the late 1940’s he teamed up with a fellow ex-serviceman buying a bombsite in London and turning it into a car park, the beginning of a very successful business. He was an extremely wealthy man who died in 2019. During WW2 he served in HMS Leander, this left a lasting impression on him so both his house .. built in 1960’s, and his very large yacht Leander G were named after the warship. There have been six ships in the Royal Navy named HMS Leander after the Greek hero. The anchor dates 1866 is from the fourth ship.
The house is now for sale, along with the two next door which he also owned.
