Graduation

Every 2 years students graduate from the Disabled Centre, having been trained in a skill such as tailoring/dressmaking, shoemaking, batik/tie-dye, agriculture. They receive a certificate, money to help them set up their own small business, some tools and a Bible.
Graduation started at '12.00'. I was asked to do the opening prayer - that happened at 2.30, then nothing more for another 30 minutes (perhaps I was expected to pray for half an hour?).
Various local officials, pastors and 'dignitories' attended including the chief and queen mother. What's a Queen mother? Here's what wikipedia says:
The title of Queen mother can relate to the rank of a paramount queen, a queen or a sub-queen. The Akan name is the same as for the men, "nana". When using English, Ghanaians say "queen mother". This woman is not necessarily the respective chief's mother. Her role in the system is to have an eye on the social conditions, and a personally capable Queen mother has been known to equal or even surpass a reigning Chief in terms of power and prestige.
Ghana TV were at the event and I was told later that I'd been seen on TV being presented with a certificate recognising our support.
The next big project for the centre is to build a primary school as many disabled children are excluded from education - this will be for disabled and able-bodied children together so hopefully it will go a long way to breaking down the stigma of disability.
